03. Cover Letter – 1st Draft

///////// WRITING OUR FIRST DRAFT

  1. Start by choosing one of the jobs you found in our first step, or choose one of the other jobs posted to the blog that interested you.
  2. Write a cover letter for that job application. Our résumés have been finalized, so you can refer to them within your letter if needed.
  3. The letter should look similar to your résumé and business cards — utilize the same typefaces and basic layout elements across all three items.
  4. Use a standard business format for your letter. This includes the name and address of the recipient at the top along with the date. Your salutation should be punctuated with a colon (Dear Mr. X:) and you should end your letter with ‘Sincerely,’ followed by 4 returns, then your name typed in full. This will be where you sign your letters when you print them out.
  5. NOTE: Try to keep your letter within 200–250 words. It needs to be concise or no one will read it.
  6. Export your first draft as a PDF and submit on Blackboard. It must be received by no later than 5:00pm to receive credit.
  7. Finally, bring three printed copies of your cover letter to class. Your letters must be signed in order to receive credit. You will also need to bring two printed copies of the job posting for which you wrote your letter.
