02. Studio Visits

\\\\ THE STUDIO VISIT

  1. Begin by rereading ‘Getting Started: Collecting Information and Composing the First Draft’ in the Artist’s Guide. This Section outlines the steps that will help us refine our concepts through discussion and critique, including conducting and reflecting on studio visits.
  2. We will need to conduct 2 studio visits: one visit will be with a peer in the art department (it may or may not be someone from this class, and it does not have to be someone within your concentration) and the other visit must be with a non-art major. You can either have two separate studio visits with each or one longer studio visit with both.
  3. Write up a list of questions you want to have answered during your studio visit(s). The purpose of these visits is to help refine our exhibition proposals, so ask questions that will help you develop your plans. You do not have to guide the entire discussion; allow your guest to speak freely as well. However, as this is likely a new opportunity for both of you, having some questions may help get a discussion started. This is an article that may help you make a plan.
  4. Show work, references and concepts related to your exhibition, rather than showing older — or current — work that may not be related in any way to your senior show. If you do not have any work that is relevant, use your proposal to help guide the conversation.
  5. As mentioned in the book, it may be most helpful to have an audio recorder rather than writing notes. Laptops, smartphones, audio recorders, video cameras, etc. are all viable options for documenting your conversations.
  6. NOTE : Although you are only required to speak with two individuals for this assignment, you are encouraged to seek out others to view and discuss your work / plans. This can include other art-majors, community members or faculty.

\\\\ REFLECTION

  1. After your studio visits, write a concise reflection paper for each visit (1-page, double-spaced for each visit, 2-pages total).
  2. Reflect on the feedback and discussions you had. Are there new concepts you want to explore? Are there problems with your work, or areas that need to be explained more? Was there anything surprising that was said, or anything you realized that you had not thought about previously? Do you foresee any challenges with the media that you hadn’t thought about previously?
  3. At the top of each reflection, write down the name of your visitor and how you know them (can be generic, such as ‘art major’ or ‘non-art friend’).
