03. Paper 1, Final

REVISED GOALS, REFLECTION PAPER, VIDEO PRESENTATION

\\\\ REVIEW YOUR LISTS OF SHORT- AND LONG-TERM GOALS

  1. Now that you have interviewed individuals who are working in your ‘dream job,’ we will re-visit our goals.
  2. Start with your Short-term goals: are there any items on your list that have changed based on your interviews? Rewrite your 10–15 short-term goals, thinking about the feedback and advice you received from the individuals whom you interviewed.
  3. Similarly, re-visit your list of Long-term goals with the same idea: rewrite or rearrange your list of 15–20 goals based on information you received during your interviews. Remember, this list is flexible as you get older; what is a long-term goal today may not even be on your radar in a year or two.
  4. Save your two lists – they will be combined with your paper to submit as a single PDF on Blackboard.

\\\\ REWRITE THE PAPER

  1. After revising your lists based on the interviews you conducted, revisit your original paper.
  2. Rewrite your paper, based on advice from your interviews. The same rules apply: 2-pages, double spaced (either two, single-sided pages or one, double-sided page). Use 12pt, Times New Roman, double-spaced with 1-inch margins on all sides. Write your name and the date at the top of both pages.
  3. Finally, add a short (no more than 250 words) paragraph describing what changes you may have made to your goals for after graduation.
  4. Papers will be graded on readability and adherence to the assignment.
  5. Instead of doing a second presentation in-class, we will be presenting our papers via video. Use Photobooth (available for Mac or PC) to record a video of yourself presenting your revised goals.

\\\\ VIDEO PRESENTATION

As you search for jobs, you may be asked to interview via Skype or Google Hangouts. It is important to practice these skills to ensure your success. Follow these tips in creating your video presentation:

  1. Make sure the volume of your microphone and speakers are correct.
  2. Make sure to look at the camera rather than screen.
  3. Speak clearly, pause often, test the strength of your microphone. Consider buying a headset if you find it unpleasant to shout into your computer microphone.
  4. Make the video space tidy and professional looking. Check for embarrassing items in the background, etc. Confine dogs and other household pets to another room. Ceiling fans are distracting. Overhead lights can look like spotlights. Open closet doors can be distracting.
  5. Make yourself professional looking. While you’ll be sitting in front of a computer screen, you will still be judged on your hair, makeup, and dress (from the torso up, anyway). I suggest a suit jacket and tie for men. A dress or jacket for women, accented with a scarf and simple jewelry, can make the right professional impression. Patterned shirts should generally be avoided, as they can be distracting.
  6. Don’t make the mistake of getting too comfortable—it’s better to sit at a desk in an office than on a sofa or easy chair.
  7. Some people suggest putting a bulletin board behind your computer screen with some brief notes to prompt yourself – this may or may not work depending on how talented you are.

Once you finish recording your video presentation using PhotoBooth, you will upload it to YouTube, and post the link (or embed the video) in a post on our course blog.
