04. Revise & Blurb

///////// REVISING OUR STATEMENTS AND WRITING A BLURB

  1. Once you have gotten your peer-reviewed statements back, we will be reviewing and revising our original 350-word statements and writing a different kind of statement: the blurb.
  2. Start by cleaning up your 350-word statement. Read through the notes given to you by your reviewers and revisit the content you initially compiled in the brainstorming phase. What elements do you need to change? What needs to be reworded? What sections sound unclear or rambling?
  3. While rewriting your statement, it can be helpful to read your content out loud, as this will give you an idea as to how the text sounds. Is it choppy? Is it confusing to read? Are there sentences that require you to take a second (or third) breath in order to finish reading it?
  4. After you have made changes to your long statement, you will then need to craft a condensed statement, often referred to as the blurb or elevator pitch. This shorter statement can be no longer than 150 words, but it must be as relevant and as descriptive as your 350-word statement. Look for the most important information, and highlight it. With only 150 words at your disposal, you are not able to use unnecessary adjectives, so begin trimming the fat until you have a lean yet descriptive statement.
