W02. Website Layout

CHOOSE A LAYOUT

As we read in the Creative Capital article, there are many layout options available when working with software such as WordPress or Squarespace (we will only be using WordPress). However, not all layouts look good or visually elevate you and your work. There are many free options, but do not let price be your only deciding factor because website layout is incredibly important. Make sure to look at the various options available for each theme/layout, including ease of use, different layout options, changing images (such as background images) and any limitations that might hinder the performance of the theme.

  1. Once you have set up your domain and web space, you will need to set up WordPress. If you are having trouble, contact the hosting company’s customer service.
  2. After getting everything installed and running, we need to find a good theme which does not distract from our work or contrast with the professional message we are trying to convey.
  3. There are many developers and companies that create custom themes with a variety of options and uses. Most have screenshots or demos which can be viewed, and many also have user reviews or forums. Always spend a bit of time looking through reviews and forums as they may bring to light compatibility issues or missing functions you may not otherwise know about before making a commitment. The website must look good on a computer, a tablet (or projector), and phone.
  4. Once you have found a theme that you want to use, you will need to install it on your site. There are many resources available online which can help you install and set up themes in WordPress. You can also help your peers, as they will be a good resource (and it’s always a good idea to be nice to your future network).
  5. Take some time to look at themes and layouts, and think carefully about your choice. You can also get feedback from classmates and faculty, friends or family.
  6. Similarly, don’t wait until the last minute to get your theme updated. Any number of issues can arise during the installation process, and if you need to contact customer support or find support online, it is best to not be rushed. Troubles with installation or setup will not be excusable and there will be no extensions on this assignment.
