04. Cover Letter Crit

///////// Critique/PROOFREADING

  1. Give 2 of your cover letters to 2 different classmates (try to find someone different than who proofread your résumés). Include a printed copy of the job posting to which you applied with each.
  2. Collect 2 cover letters (with job postings) from 2 other classmates — not the individuals to whom you gave your letters.
  3. Proofread the letters you were given. Make sure to start by reviewing the job posting — that is the only way to tell whether or not the letter is on-message or not.
  4. Questions you should ask yourself as you read:
    • Are there any spelling or grammatical errors?
    • Are all the elements of a successful cover letter included?
    • Were there any elements that should be left out?
    • Is the letter tailored to the job posting, or does it sound generic?
    • Do the sections flow together, logically?
    • Are there parts that are confusing or difficult to read?
    • Is it addressed to a person and is it signed at the bottom?
  5. When you are done proofreading the letters, sign and date the back, then hand them back to the original writers.
  6. Take your third copy to the Writing Center to be proofread. Make sure to have it signed and dated on the back by the individual who read it.
  7. For class, bring your three, proofread copies, complete with signatures and dates. You must hand back the letters you read before the start of class, or else you will not receive credit for reading letters.
