02. Freelance Project Proposal

PROJECT PROPOSAL

As a designer, you will often be required to present not only your work but also the scope of the project itself. The proposal outlines the various elements of the project, and should be understood by not only the designer but also the client and anyone with whom the client speaks.

  1. We will be giving short, PowerPoint presentations about our clients and the projects on which we are working this semester. Each presentation should last between 10–15 minutes; anything longer than 15 minutes will be ended immediately and there will be a final grade reduction of 10% (one letter grade).
  2. There will be 7 topics that need to be covered in your presentation:
    • Client : Describe who your client is. This includes things such as what their business is, where they are located (not necessarily address, but general location), who they serve (audience), how long they’ve been in business, who your contact person is, who will be approving the work, etc.
    • Scope : The scope of the project includes what the client has asked you to do (such as design a logo) and why you are doing it (such as ‘to help the client compete within their market’). NOTE: Determine why the client wants the design that they are purchasing. For example, a client may say that they just need a new logo, but you must figure out why they feel this way.
    • Budget : How much are you charging for this project, and how did you come to this number?
    • Timeline : How long will the project take? While you do not need to outline every little detail, you will need to explain when the project officially began, when it will end (when will you receive payment), when you will complete the initial ideation and when you will get final artwork to the client for approval.
    • Research : What research will you be doing during the course of this project? Will you be looking at the competition? Finding a printer? Exploring other concepts from other designers? Although we may think of research as just a part of the process, it is something we should include in our initial quotes and timelines. Give at least 4 examples of research you have completed or will complete before the end of the project.
    • In-progress Solutions : Show the class work you have completed. This may be sketches or research, but you must be able to explain how the work you have done works towards solving the challenge on which you are working.
    • In-progress Timesheet : Give us an outline of how much time you’ve spent on the project, including time spent in meetings, doing research, sketching, etc.
  3. Along with the above 7 elements, you must also include an introduction, a conclusion and have relevant visual aids such as images or video.
  4. NOTE: You are DESIGNERS. That means that you should be aware of the visual qualities of things that you produce. If your slides look like default PowerPoint slides, or if they can be called ‘not designed,’ you will lose points for your overall presentation quality.
