03. Peer Review

You will have printed 3 copies of your statement for class. For this review, you will need to find 2 classmates to read through your statement, but not the same two individuals who proofread your résumé — give them each one copy. Finally, you will need to find 1 non-art major (can also be non-art faculty or staff) to read and give feedback about your statement. Details for each of these steps are as follows.

  1. Art Major Peer Critique (2): Give a statement to two different people, and collect statements from two others (do not just trade statements with someone). Read the statements for clarity, flow, content and ultimately spelling and grammatical errors. Sign your name clearly on the back of the statements you review, along with the date you read it.
  2. Non-Art Major Critique: Finally, have someone who is not an art major or art faculty/staff to read your statement. Remember, statements must be accessible to both artists and non-artists, so the feedback you get from this individual will tell you whether or not your writing is clear of too filled with art jargon. You may want to ask this individual questions after they have read it, such as ‘Was there anything that did not make sense?’ or ‘Are there any parts that need more clarification?’ You could also give them images of your work to look at while they read, as it may better help them make connections between what you are saying and what you are doing.
  3. When you are finished with proofreading the statements you received, you may hand them back to the original writer. Make sure that your notes are clear and easy to understand — the original writer will need to make corrections without you present to explain what you meant.
  4. You will need to return your statements to the original writers by no later than the start of class on the date they are due.
