*WEEK 1*

DAY 1 – Mon, Aug 24
IN CLASS:
Saul Bass “LEARN TO DRAW!”

– Overview of syllabus (recommend viewing the syllabus online rather than printing it out)
– discuss proper attire for class (something you don’t mind getting dirty and that you can comfortably move around in)
– introduce everyone to each other, talk about people’s goals for the course
– Introductory Lectures: History of Drawing 

– review the sketchbook guidelines
– discuss required exhibition receptions (see schedule), required field trips (this Saturday), and optional trips (NYC – Nov 5-8, Graphic Design Conference – Nov 14)

– discuss syllabus contract assignment/quiz on Blackboard (walk through Blackboard)
– discuss pet peeves list
– Do sample reading report for Perspective/Terminology, and sign everyone up for reading reports (sign-up sheet) and collect everyone’s preferred email address for the blog assignments

DAY 2 – Wed, Aug 26

– Reading report on Cubes <– we’ll skip this and I’ll do a demo in class instead since we didn’t do the sign-up
– Stretching intro (low-back, shoulders, wrists, neck, etc)
– watching a video on 1 vs 2-point perspective, and the cone of vision
– 1 point and 2 point perspective cubes and cube-stacks and MAYBE go outside to draw a building

– Reminder to always sign and date your drawings on the back so you can easily compile your portfolio assignments at midterm and final

– In class exercises: Draw the hallways in 2 point perspective (emphasis on identifying the leading edge)

– talk about HW Drawing 1 brainstorming research

– 3 HW Drawing I sketches to class
– Reminder: bring a DSLR camera and your laptop to class (if you don’t have your own, get one as soon as possible or try to check one out at the library) – we’ll be taking photos, putting them on the computer, and editing them as a group

DAY 4 – Wed, Sept 2
IN CLASS:
– presentations of 3 sketches for Homework Drawing 1
– review what is required for blog posts and demo how to post to the blog
– demo how to take good pics of your work – everyone will practice this with their own camera
– demo how to do simple color corrections in Photoshop  – everyone will practice this with their own computer
– Discuss artist research report assignment (this is why you’re going to the library for next class)

– Story-boarding (4 windows on your page). Tell a story using composition and the still life. Feel free to zoom in or out. Each window should have an interesting and unique composition within it, and the story should be clear as it moves from window to window.
