MURALS

Why are we doing this?
When you graduate with an Art Degree, you are virtually guaranteed that someone will assume you are a master at mural painting (all Art Majors are great large-scale painters, right!?). This project is a chance to practice those skills while beautifying the Art Department for years to come.

Objectives/Requirements
These murals must display an interesting composition and effective use of your assigned space (review your elements and principles of design). Additionally, we will practice working with a client, and your mural must also reach a compromise that the client is happy with (I am your client). Beyond these aesthetic requirements, you will also have to manage a limited amount of paint, a timeline, and all communications with your team members.

This assignment takes the place of Homework Drawing II. This mural project lasts several weeks and will continue while you work on other assignments. Everyone will work in teams of 2-3 people that I will assign. There are 5 mural locations, each with a specific theme to work with. You must consider the specific context of your assigned space.

  1. Bathroom 1 (located in the hallway off the Sleeth Gallery – not the bathroom that already has a mural in it).
    THEME = art historical reference of your choice. , black/white/color-of-your-choice
    – JuHo
    – Malik
    – Alicia

  2. Bathroom 2 (located off the drawing studio and has a row of hooks – it is currently labeled ‘women’ but we’re updating it to be unisex).
    THEME = art historical reference of your choice. , black/white/color-of-your-choice
    – Allison
    – De’Andre
    – Brittany

  3. Bathroom 3 located off the drawing studio and is the smaller of the two – it is currently labeled ‘men’ but we’re updating it to be unisex).
    THEME = art historical reference of your choice, black/white/color-of-your-choice
    – Katie
    – Malcomb
    – Michael

  4. The entry way between McCuskey 113 and 115 – currently there’s some spray-paint graffiti in that area and we’ll be painting over it.
    THEME = Buckhannon and/or WVWC, black/white/orange
    – Jada
    – Logan D
    – Ali

  5. The entry way between McCuskey and Doney Halls (again, there’s old graffiti there, and we’ll be painting over it.
    THEME = Buckhannon and/or WVWC, black/white/orange
    – Wyatt
    – Logan H
    – Bri
    – Eliza

We will work as a class to go through the steps of brainstorming, sketching, narrowing ideas, improving ideas, and finally executing the ideas. This process will take place over the course of the semester with final critique taking place on Wed, Nov 11 during class. See the schedule for other dates of in-process critiques/deadlines.

When you work on your mural, be sure to lay down plastic to protect the floor. Tape plastic to walls if necessary. Use masking tape wherever necessary. Each time you work on your mural, make sure the space is absolutely spotless and clean when you leave.

Grading Criteria

5pt – Quality of communication with your team mates (you will all be grading each other)
