*WEEK 1*

DAY 1 – Mon, Jan 22

– Intro Syllabus
– everyone add their full name and photo to Canvas
– Talk about Art Events and field trip to the Zeiterion on Feb 10

– Intro Documentation Assignment
– ice-breaker figure drawing
– discuss conduct with life models

DAY 2 – Wed, Jan 24
IN CLASS:
– Do some gesture practice (Mass-Gesture, Line-Gesture, Mass/Line Gesture, Scribble-Gesture)

– Foreshortening review: one group lies on the floor in a circle (heads to the middle). The other group sits in a line a few feet from them and draws. After 30 minutes, swap positions. Then, we’ll split into pairs and do the same exercise, but one-on-one (people can assume more creative positions as long as the drawer is able to see a foreshortened view) until time is up.

– figure drawing – “The Skeleton” (measuring accurately – viewfinder, sighting stick, proportion comparisons)
– View this presentation on breaking the figure into planes and forms

– figure drawing with model – try cross-contour lines at least twice between each joint of the body

DAY 6 – Wed, Feb 7 
IN CLASS:

– reminder about Frederick Douglass portraits and Zeiterion Dance Drawings
collaborating with the uncontrollable – figure drawing with model

DUE NEXT CLASS:
-Draw a portrait of Frederick Douglass to turn in – it can be any size/medium you like.  It could be anything from a very serious oil painting portrait, to a small pencil drawing, to a sort of reflection inspired by Frederick Douglass and his love of portraiture. It needs to be printed if it’s a digital work (unfortunately, no monitors are available). These will be shown at the Frederick Douglass birthday celebration, February 14th 4-6PM, hosted by the Unity House on campus, and then, they’ll go to the National Park maker space in NB for the rest of February. What a great way to build your resume!

REQUIRED EVENT: Sat, Feb 10, 8pm; Dance performance at Zeiterion – we’ll be sketching in our sketchbooks during the performance.


*WEEK 4*

DAY 7 – Mon, Feb 12 
IN CLASS:
– COLLECT all the Frederick Douglass portraits
presentation on privilege and difference, then do Privilege Posters exercise
-live model in class – some regular gesture practice and short poses; then we’ll start some layered mixed media pieces to experiment with drawing the figure in charcoal, marker, and gesso on the heavier white paper 

DUE NEXT CLASS:
– Read “The Perils of a Man Painting Naked Women in 2018” (found in the “Files” section on Canvas) and submit at least 3 sentences of response on Canvas

DAY 8 – Wed, Feb 14 
IN CLASS:
– reminder about attendance policy
Remembering the body exercise with Erwin Wurm 1-minute sculptures
– at 5pm we’ll go to the Unity House to celebrate our portraits in the Frederick Douglass exhibit

– talk about Drawing with the body exercises (be thinking about the motions you might want to explore, and be ready with masking tape to create larger sheets of newsprint for this exercise)

ART EVENT: Wed, Feb 21, 6:30pm, Star Store room 432 – Mark Cooper visiting lecture

ART EVENT: February 24th – 12PM Dog Derive starting at the New Bedford Art Museum: Grab your dog, coats, best dog outfits, and a travel mug! NBAM/AW! will be providing dog treats, coffee, and hot cocoa for your puppy-guided adventure around New Bedford. Non-dog owner’s are totally welcome! We’ll be traveling in “packs” with two professional dog walkers as well as Roz Crews from The Center for Undisciplined Research to explore New Bedford as a community of dog lovers!

DAY 14 – Wed, Mar 7 [work at the library or the VML]
IN CLASS:
go to library and do on-location portrait work (this is unsupervised – at our next class, you should show evidence of at least 1 hour of observational drawing from the library – be prepared to describe where you sat and what you struggled with, or excelled at)

– you can also use this time to complete your midterm documentation photos – visit the VML if you need help photographing or scanning your work
