*WEEK 1*

DAY 1 – Mon, Aug 19
IN CLASS:
– Go over syllabus (located on this site) and discuss syllabus contract (located on Angel)
Intro to Performance Art
– Discuss required & suggested out-of-class events (receptions, Rocky Horror, NYC fieldtrip, Paris summer trip)
– Create food schedule (if people want it)
– Presentation on Components of an Artwork (Subject/Form/Content/Context)
– Discuss DSLR  and audio recorder skills tests
– Everyone will be assigned an artist from Ch 1. [Mario Scaparro, Fedele Azari, Fortunato Depero, Francesco Cangiullo, Valentine de Saint-Point, Giacomo Balla, Luigi Russolo, Carlo Carra, Alfred Jarry, Tommaso Marinetti]

DUE NEXT CLASS SESSION:
– Complete syllabus contract on Angel
– Read Chapter 1 of “Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present” and complete quiz on Angel

DAY 2 – Wed, Aug 21
IN CLASS:
– Discuss Ch 1
– talk about possible partnership with the Feminist Theory class on our final project
– Presentation on elements/principles of design carried over from 2/3D design
– Practice with DSLRs and audio recorders (in-class participatory demonstrations)
– introduce Difficult Task Performance assignment – do brainstorming activity in class

DUE NEXT CLASS SESSION:
– Read Chapter 2 of “Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present” and complete quiz on Angel
– Prepare brainstorming/research for Difficult Task Performance. We will present this in class

DAY 3 – Mon, Aug 26
IN CLASS:
– Discuss Ch 2
– Presentation on elements of 4D design
– Practice with DSLRs/Audio recorders (people pairing up and filming each other perform in different situations)
– Critique of brainstorming/research for Difficult Task Performance Performances

DUE NEXT CLASS SESSION:
– Read Chapter 3 of “Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present” and take quiz
– Be ready to take the skills test in class

DAY 4 – Wed, Aug 28
IN CLASS:
– Discuss Ch 3
– Discuss principles of 4D design
– Discuss privilege (presentation) and article: “How to Talk to Someone about Privilege…”
– Take DSLR/Audio Recorder skills test
– work on Difficult Task Performance in class if necessary, and make performance schedule

DUE NEXT CLASS SESSION:
– Read Chapter 4 of “Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present” and bring a discussion question to class

***On the evening of Aug 29, there will be a lecture by the Curator of American Art from the Smithsonian. This is a required event. 7pm Hyma Auditorium, Christopher Hall of Science, room 114.***

– Discuss Ch 6
– Sociological images exercise: everyone take a tag, and find an article they connect with. Tags: sex, culture, socialization, bodies, clothes/fashion, marriage/family, prejudice/discrimination, social construction, social structure, sexual orientation, gender, public opinion, politics. We’ll share the articles and do a brainstorming exercise.
– Difficult Task Performance (Tim (video), Jess (video), Natasha (video) + critique)
