– Go over the Life Model Code of Conduct
– Drawing Exercise to refresh after winter break: Pastel gestures (Mass-Gesture, Line-Gesture, Mass/Line Gesture, Scribble-Gesture) with classmates as models
– talk about color reading quiz (from the pink book) and SB01: Landmarks

*WEEK 2*

DAY 2 – Mon, Jan 18 

IN CLASS:
– Introduce P01: Dream Sequence
– Pastel Foreshortening review: one group lies on the floor in a circle (heads to the middle). The other group sits in a line a few feet from them and draws. After 30 minutes, swap positions. Then, we’ll split into pairs and do the same exercise, but one-on-one (people can assume more creative positions as long as the artist is able to see a foreshortened view) until time is up.

DAY 3 – Wed, Jan 20 

IN CLASS:
– check sketchbooks color wheel and see how dream journals are coming along
– take time to look at and discuss “Gods’ Man” and “Haunter” in class

– Pastel Figure Drawing – 1-2pm – Seth Dowell 
– demo use of glassine paper (in preparation for your midterm portfolio)
– discuss Planes/Forms in preparation for sketchbook assignment

– Colored Pencils Figure Drawing, Noon-1:30pm, Seth Dowell (figure drawing with emphasis on contour lines at least twice between each joint of the body) [Andy Thorne is visiting to give a figure drawing demo]
– discuss Artist Statements
– Intro P02: Alter-Ego/Fictional Persona and do brainstorming in class
– Discuss CH 1-3 of Understanding Comics
– Discuss Maus and use of 2 styles in a single work

*WEEK 6*

Day 10 – Mon, Feb 15 

IN CLASS:
– view everyone’s progress on P02 and do Pyramid Critique: the class has to arrange the entire class output of drawings into a pyramid. The top is the piece that best fits the expectations. The second row are the two that almost made it…third row…fourth row etc. I will leave the room for 15 minutes while arranging happens. I will return and the class has to explain the choices.
– discuss CH 4-6
– reminder for all students to take the course evaluation
Composition in Storytelling
– Portrait exercise (using china markers on duralar; we’ll practice drawing the muscles of the face) – work in pairs drawing features in graphite on one side, then drawing musculature in red on backside; finished work looks like this

– remind everyone to be thinking about what they might put into the class exhibit

DAY 15 – Wed, Mar 9 

IN CLASS:

– introduce class exhibition and decide on a title, and make list of what everyone is exhibiting
– Discuss/Demo Framing (metal, wood, grommets, binder clips, floating vs matting) – WITH BOBBY HOWSARE sometime after 1:30pm

– go over scanning and creating a PDF file for Lulu (remember, you have to order 2 copies); recommend test print of your PDF at the service center
