P01: Dream Sequence

Before we start, read 2 dialog-less graphic novels (we will have in class discussion on these works – be ready to talk about them in class):

“Gods’ Man” by Lynd Ward
“Haunter” by Sam Alden (links to Part 1, Part 2or, PDFs found under “Files” on Canvas)

Why are we doing this?

Before we move onto multi-page graphic novels, we’re going to each create a single-page dialog-less narrative to get a better understanding of creating narrative moments and establishing an environment. This project will also provide a chance to further practice using color pastels, composition skills, and color theory.

How are we doing this?

  1. Everyone will keep a dream journal for 1 week. This can be written notes or small thumbnail sketches. You have to show evidence of recording your dreams (I won’t be reading them thoroughly for privacy reasons, but I expect to see a clear week’s worth of effort put forth).
  2. Using your dreams as source material, make 3 rough sketches of your dialog-less dream story / narrative / event / environment in a single, large drawing – it should create one large experience. Check out the samples below to see how people have previously created single-page narratives. Be ready to discuss how you plan to employ color. You will present these 3 sketches to the class for feedback.
  3. Using the feedback from class, create your dream sequence piece using predominantly pastel on 2 sheets of 18″x24″ white paper (Advanced Students – you must do 3 pages), arranged anyway you like, but they must create a continuous picture plane (you cannot do 1 scene on one piece of paper and then do another scene on the 2nd piece of paper). You can use additional media, but the clear dominant media must be pastel.
