Video – Self Portrait

Why we’re doing this
– To explore how your ideas about video and yourself can be made manifest and available for discussion
– To explore how you use the videos created by others through processes of interpretation and refashioning to make them your “own”
– To explore who or what “owns” the ideas, approaches, processes, and products of video art (and art in general)
– To explore how we judge what constitutes a successful, competent, and/or engaging video

STEPS (see schedule for exact dates)
1) Brainstorm what makes you “YOU” and what video footage may speak to these ideas
2) Find video footage
3) Edit footage together to create a self-portrait (the end product should be between 1 and 5 minutes long)

PROCESS
1) We will do some brainstorming in class, and you will continue to brainstorm outside of class.
2) You will go online and download the necessary footage for your self-portrait.  You can use the Firefox plugin (it adds a download button to any YouTube video), or sites like keepvid.com.
3) You will edit the footage together using video editing software (Final Cut Pro, or iMovie, or Windows Movie Maker).  The video should be no longer than 5 minutes and no shorter than 1 minute.

GRADING CRITERIA
— Completion and quality of the video self-portrait
— Worked within the time constraints
— Reflection on the self-portrait
