Video – Nature Experiment

Why we’re doing this
– To explore how your ideas about nature, video, and yourself can be made manifest and available for discussion
– To explore the use of the scientific process as an artistic approach
– To explore pans, tilts, the rule of thirds, and a dolly shot
– To explore how we judge what constitutes a successful, competent, and/or engaging video

STEPS (see schedule for exact dates)

  1. Brainstorm a performative experiment based on the scientific method
  2. Create  shot list, (you don’t have to have a script to make a shot list, but you do need to have a general idea of what you’re planning) and have a copy to turn in
  3. Film your performance.
  4. Edit footage together to create a visually interesting piece.

PROCESS
1) We will do some brainstorming in class, and you will continue to brainstorm outside of class.  It can help to review our reading, “Art in the Age of Technoscience” (pgs 118-121).
2) Plan how you will shoot this performative experiment.  You must include at least one of each of these: pan, tilt, an example of the rule of thirds, and a dolly shot.
3) Shoot the performance.
4) You will edit the footage together using video editing software to create a compelling and visually interesting piece.  The video should be no longer than 5 minutes and no shorter than 1 minute.
