Video – A Walk

Why we’re doing this
– To explore how your ideas about walking, nature, video, and yourself can be made manifest and available for discussion
– To explore the use of walking as an artistic approach
– To explore low angles, using your car to shoot, a cut-in/insert shot, and a close-up shot
– To explore how we judge what constitutes a successful, competent, and/or engaging video

STEPS (see schedule for exact dates)

  1. Brainstorm a conceptually interesting performative walk in nature. If you have trouble coming up with ideas, check out this list of artists who use walking as their artistic practice.
  2. Create a shot list, (you don’t have to have a script to make a shot list, but you do need to have a general idea of what you’re planning) and have a copy to turn in.
  3. Film your performance.
  4. Edit footage together to create a visually interesting piece.

PROCESS
1) We will do some brainstorming in class, and you will continue to brainstorm outside of class.  It can help to review our reading on Hamish Fulton, “A Nomad among Builders” (pgs 36-37).
2) Plan how you will shoot this performative walk.  You must include at least one of each of these: a low angle, a shot using your car, a cut in shot, and a close-up shot.
3) Shoot the performance.
4) You will edit the footage together using video editing software to create a compelling and visually interesting piece. The video should be no longer than 5 minutes and no shorter than 1 minute.
