Tips for framing canvases:
- Decide if you want a frame. I say, if the stretcher is less than 1.5″ deep, then you need to frame it. If it is at least this deep, then you can hang it with a wire across the back. You can use strap hangers or eye screws with braided picture wire in between.
- If you need to frame it, purchase a frame (see suggestions here), and assemble the frame. Wood frames assemble differently than metal frames – choose according to your needs.
- Once the frame is built, you will need to insert the painting into the frame. If it is a wood frame you will use offset clips or a point driver to secure the work into the frame. If it is a metal frame, you will use the metal spring clips to secure the work.
- Finally, you will put the wire across the back as described in step 1. Metal frames have special inserts for tying the wire to.
