Why are we doing this? (objectives)
You will create a zine about your major (or what you think your major might be) in order to familiarize yourself with the program of study and the students in it.
- Investigate majors with in CVPA and possible career options
- To recognize and utilize the intellectual community of the College of Visual and Performing Arts and resources of the University at large.
- To engage in collaborative learning
PROCESS
Your zine will include the following items. We will be visited by faculty from each major during class – you can ask them questions about these items for your zine.
- Description of the major (what classes you need to take, who the faculty are and how to contact them)
- An interview with a junior or senior in the major (this a person you will seek out – perhaps by attending a club meeting, etc.)
- Maps of where classes are (might be) held (and any other important spaces – print labs, etc.)
- Info about the student group/club associated with the major (what do they do, online presence, contact info, etc)
- Any other info you feel is relevant (photos, illustrations, statistics, collage, etc.) – Just make sure these look good when you reproduce them (you might play with contrast and other settings in your photo editing software)
This can be an 8-page zine made from a single sheet of paper or a 1/2 sheet saddle-stitched (stapled) zine (also 8-pages). You will turn in 2 copies of your zine (1 for grading, and 1 for public display). This zine can be printed in black & white, or color, on any color paper you choose. Your audience is future art/design students. Be ready to explain your design decisions in terms of subject/form/content/context.

Grading

3 pts – craft (were these cut out well, do the pages align, etc.)
5 pts – does it include the required elements and feature useful info about the major?
5 pts – is it well designed (think in terms of the elements/principles of design) and aimed at the target audience (concept/context)?
