Thesis

While our exhibitions are under way, and we’re in the last stretch, there is one final thing we have to complete this semester: our thesis packets.

Step 1: Compile Content

Our thesis packets are archived by WVWC so that future generations can look at the work we did and pass judgement. Our packets will be made up of the writings we have completed over the last 8 months.

ARTISTS:

  • Professional interviews
  • Goals essay
  • 3 exhibition concepts
  • Final exhibition proposal
  • Press release
  • Résumé
  • Artist talk script
  • Aritst statement
  • Images of work

FREELANCERS:

  • Professional interviews
  • Goals essay
  • Business plan
  • SWOT analysis
  • Coverletter
  • Résumé
  • Portfolio presentation script
  • Images of work — portfolio / exhibition
  • Powerpoint/PDF presentation (final)

Step 2: Create a Single Document

For the thesis packet, combine all of your materials into a single document. Your document needs to have the following elements:

  1. Title page — Include your name, the date and the statement ‘This packet is in partial fulfillment of the bachelor of arts degree in art.’
  2. Table of contents — This page needs to have page numbers for each section of your content.
  3. Content — Your content sections consists of all of the different papers we’re submitting. Each paper needs to have a sub title (can simply be bold text) and each new paper goes on its own page. See the formatting section below.
  4. Images — Images must be high quality (300dpi) and must be clear and well-lit. Under each image, include a caption that includes the title, medium, and size of the piece. Also include a few shots of the installation itself (Freelancers will only have portfolio imagery).

Step 3: Format

Margins — 1″ on left, top, right; 1.5″ on bottom
Font — 12pt, Georgia, double-spaced, left aligned
Subhead — Same as font, just bold
Page numbers — Placed at the bottom-right corner of the document; include your last name next to them
Captions — 10pt, Georgia, directly below the image — titles in italics

I have included an example of what the document should look like here: thesis-example.docx

Step 4: Submission

Once you have your thesis document set up and complete, save it as a PDF. Then, on a disc (CD or DVD) burn the following:

  1. Folder with all of your full-size images
  2. Your Word document
  3. Your PDF

On the front of the CD, write your name, the date and the text ‘Senior Thesis – Art.’

Step 5: Submission

Place the disk in my door mailbox no later than Mon, May 4, at 6pm (our final exam time)
