Senior Preview Exhibit

While we’ve spent a lot of time (hopefully) thinking about what our works will look like, we may not have spent as much time thinking about how the works will be displayed.

As part of the exhibition planning process, we’ll be staging a ‘preview’ show in the Corner Gallery (see schedule for dates). We will be covering items such as spacing, hanging height, organization, etc.

Step 1: Finish a Piece

Each artist must have at least one piece completed, in gallery-ready condition. Gallery-ready means that it is completed, with a hanging mechanism / plan. This could include (but is not limited to) any of the following:

  • frame
  • wire
  • binder clips
  • sawtooth hanger
  • grommets
  • magnets

Since some of us are not creating traditional works (paintings, drawings, etc.), for this exhibition we will need to create one piece that can be hung in a gallery environment. However, the work must be relevant to your exhibition. For example: if your final exhibition will be a series of hand-decorated cakes that explode when people get near them, you may want to frame a photograph or mock-up of the cake(s) for use in this preview exhibition.

Step 2: Bring Your Piece to Class

Each artist will be required to bring their piece, completed, with installed hanging mechanism. Each artist will explain how their hanging mechanism will work, and why that option is the best solution for his / her work. On this day we will also discuss the hanging process, including height, organization, spacing, etc.

GRADING: 5 points (pass/fail) – piece comes to class and is ready to hang

Step 3: Installing an Exhibition

We will hang our pieces in the Corner Gallery as part of the senior preview exhibition. Bring your work to class with all necessary hanging hardware — the gallery will have nails and hammers. The entire class will be in charge of organizing the exhibition, and each student will be required to hang his / her individual piece. Remember, the center of a work should be at approximately 58″ and the center of all works in a space should be at the same level. Also, when you light a work, there should be no shadows on the work.

GRADING: 5 points (pass/fail) – install work as planned
