Price List

As part of our exhibitions, we will need to produce a price list of our works (or for things we will be selling). Pricing our works is incredibly difficult: there is no ‘magic formula,’ nor is there a right or wrong way to do it. Pricing an art work is ultimately a gamble — too low and you won’t make back what you spent in terms of time and materials, but too high and no one will purchase it.

Step 1: Artists’ Reading

We will begin by reading the section ‘Selling Your Art’ in Chapter 06 of The Artist’s Guide. This section examines the financial challenges of pricing and selling works.

Step 2: Reflection

ARTISTS: While reading, take note of the following:

  • What were 5 things you found surprising, confusing or interesting?
  • What are 5 things you, personally, will remember while coming up with prices for your work?

FREELANCERS: Although we aren’t required to read this section of the book (you can, if you want), we have had to deal with pricing our services over the last 8 months. For your reflection, answer the following:

  • What have been your 5 biggest challenges with coming up with fees / payments?
  • What are 5 things you will do differently when you take on clients in the future?

Step 3: Research

Finally, after reflecting on our readings, find 3 other sources (books or online) with guidelines or suggestions for how to price your work. For these sources, include the following:

  • Where did you find it? (title, URL if applicable)
  • Was there anything that contradicted the other sources?
  • Was there anything that was similar to the other sources?
  • Do you feel this article was helpful? Including ‘Why’ or ‘Why not.’

Step 4: Submission

Submit a PDF with your reflection and research on Blackboard.
