Poster/Postcard

For our exhibitions, we will need to create a poster and postcard advertising our shows and artist talks.

Required Elements:

  • Title of the exhibition
  • Name of the artist
  • Dates of the exhibition
  • Gallery location (Sleeth – First floor McCuskey at the corner of Main St and College Ave // Corner – First floor of McCuskey, room 116)
  • Gallery hours (Sleeth – 12 – 5, M-F // Corner – 2:30 – 6, M-F)
  • Artist talks (date/time/location)
  • The statement: This exhibition is in partial fulfillment for the completion of the Bachelor of Arts Degree.

Step 1: Create a Poster

Exhibition posters can take many forms. A quick Google image search for ‘art exhbition poster’ turns up millions of possibilities (see for yourself).

For this assignment it will be up to you as the artist to determine what will make a good poster. Will it be expressive or simple? Will it be an image of your work, or an abstract design? Will the text be over top of the image, or will the text be separated?

You will also need to determine what size the posters will be — will you print them at 11″ x 17″, or smaller? Will it be horizontal or vertical?

Sleeth: If you are exhibiting in the Sleeth, the Gallery Director will give you a template to use for the poster. You will need to have Helvetica.

Step 2: Create a Postcard

Your marketing materials will also need to include postcards which will be delivered to all faculty and staff mailboxes, left in the gallery, mailed to friends and family, etc.

Your postcard is similar to the poster: will it be one-sided or two-sided? Will it be expressive or simple? Will it be an image of your work, or an abstract design? Will the text be over top of the image, or will the text be separated?

You will also need to find a printer for your postcards. Although most students use the Service Center on campus (cheap, and quick, but low-quality), you can also use another company such as http://overnightprints.com or http://vistaprint.com. (Note that there will be shipping / handling fees, and you will need to make arrangments to receive the cards before the due date)

Sleeth: If you are exhibiting in the Sleeth, the Gallery Director will give you a template to use for the BACK of the postcard. The front will be up to you.
