Crowd-Sourced Film

BACKGROUND

Many works of art on the internet utilize crowdsourcing strategies (relying on others to execute portions of the work).

One example is Jonathan Rattner’s crowd-sourced documentary, “Driftless: Decorah by Decorah.” He explains the collage film,  “will consist of short videos, shot by community members on smartphones, featuring a person they care about doing what that person loves or finds interesting.”  And, what promises to be rewarding for all participants, the film will screen at the 2016 Oneota Film Festival this coming March.

OBJECTIVES

– Examine the use of internet crowd-sourcing as an artistic tool (giving up some control to others)
– Practicing using the elements and principles of 4D art and design
– Using your creative voice to speak on a subject that matters to you

STEPS:

1. Pick a subject to make a documentary about, and create a call for submissions with a deadline of March 17 (Here is a sample call)
2. Promote the idea on social media – you must obtain at least 5 contributions (from at least 5 different people)
3. Take all the submitted media, and work with simple video-editing software (iMovie or Windows Movie Maker or YouTube Creator Studio) to create a short documentary film (no more than 2-3 minutes).
***you must list your contributors in the credits of your film***
4. In critique, you must be able to point out which clips are yours and which clips belong to others, why you used the transitions you used (transitions), why you used the length of the clips you used (duration), and justify any other choices / explain your efforts to make the work visually appealing

GRADING
– Did you make it visually appealing using the elements and principles of art and design?
– Are you able to verbally articulate how you using the elements and principles of art and design to try to make the work visually appealing in critique?
– Did the film use the chosen subject to create interesting content/meaning?
– Did you use at least 5 contributions?
– Did you do a good job of promoting your project to get collaborators?
