01. Daily Journal

Why we’re doing this (objectives):

To identify and discuss issues in contemporary art as they relate to students’ studio practice

To investigate majors with in CVPA and possible career options

To become more comfortable with speedy brainstorming

To become better at critiquing the 4 components of an artwork (subject, form, content, context)

Process:

Each day at the start of class we’ll be watching a video focused on a contemporary artist (selections from Art21, The Art Assignment, TateShots, Dutch Design Profiles, Craft in America, Kaldor Art Project, Ford Foundation, Studio International, The New Creatives, Adobe Creative Cloud,  Hillman Curtis, Vancouver Artist Interviews, etc). Selections will be focused on the areas of study in art and design at the CVPA.

In your Daily Journal I will give you a writing/sketching prompt/assignment inspired by the video. For example:

  • “Describe an artwork you would like to make inspired by what we just saw”
  • “Brainstorm 10 ways this artist relates to our community”
  • “Critique one artwork mentioned in the video according to the 4 components of an artwork (subject, form, content, context).”

We will often share our journal entries with the group and make alterations/add-ons to the entries based on these interactions.

Grading Criteria:

2 points for each entry. Entries will be graded on effort, length, originality.
