*WEEK 1* 

DAY 1 – Wed, Jan 15 – Reviewing Skills
IN CLASS:
– Overview of syllabus, discuss syllabus contracts/quiz, review supply list, Q&A, etc
– Review of banality/tropes/cliche/the didactic
– tell students about extra credit opportunity: The Colbert Bump
– Introduce everyone to each other, talk about people’s goals for the course
Presentation discussing The Creative Habit, and the media we’ll be exploring, and why
– Assign cubbies
– review life model code of conduct
– Foreshortening review: one group lies on the floor in a circle (heads to the middle). The other group sits in a line a few feet from them and draws. After 30 minutes, swap positions. Then, we’ll split into pairs and do the same exercise, but one-on-one (people can assume more creative positions as long as the drawer is able to see a foreshortened view) until time is up.

DUE NEXT CLASS SESSION:
– Syllabus contract must be completed on Blackboard by 1 hour before the start of our next class
– Take Color Combos & Interactions survey on Blackboard (this does not count toward your grade, but helps me to see where the class is at in terms of understanding color)

DAY 2 – Mon, Jan 20 – Reviewing Skills
IN CLASS:
– Introduce the Applications Assignment
– Watch drawing video (half before we start with the model, and 2nd half after)

– life model (Amanda 12-1, Rachel 1-2) – remembering/practicing how to draw the human figure; review Mass-Gesture, Line-Gesture, Mass/Line Gesture, Scribble-Gesture.

SB01: Scale
– Read: Creative Habit chapters 1&2 and take the online quiz

DAY 3 – Wed, Jan 22 – Reviewing Skills
IN CLASS:
– check sketchbook work
– Watching video on colored pencil techniques
– still life with emphasis on value/light source/texture (using pencil) and then draw a select area of the still life using a color scheme (colored pencil)

DUE NEXT CLASS SESSION:
SB02: Texture
– Read: Creative Habit chapters 3&4 and take the quiz
– Read: Creative Habit chapters 5&6 and bring a discussion question to class written on a piece of paper with your name on it – you will be graded on the quality of your question (Read Good Discussion Questions)

DAY 4 – Mon, Jan 27 – Reviewing Skills

– figure drawing (Emily)
– reminder that you will need a jump drive or portable hard drive for our work in the computer lab (no saving to the machines)

SB03: Hands & Feet
– Read: Creative Habit chapters 7&8 and bring discussion question with your name on it
– remember to bring your thumb drive or hard drive to class

DAY 5 – Wed, Jan 29 – Intro to Adobe Illustrator (meeting in the computer lab)

IN CLASS:
– check sketchbook work
– discussion of Creative Habit chapters 7&8
– Talk about Why we learn Adobe Illustrator, look at images of examples, and discuss what is associated with Illustrator
– watch Adobe Illustrator introduction videos (1, 2, 3, 4) & practice tracing a photo with the pen tool

DUE NEXT CLASS SESSION:
SB04: Planes of the Face
– Read: Creative Habit chapters 9&10 and bring discussion question with your name on it.

*WEEK 4* 

DAY 6 – Mon, Feb 3 – Adobe Illustrator
IN CLASS:
– check sketchbook assignments
– discussion of reading
– go to Loar Music hall to assign spaces, measure walls, and brainstorm ideas at the computer lab (some may begin looking for source images for their vinyl music-related mural)
We will spend a portion of class as guest critics at the Senior Seminar class

DUE NEXT CLASS SESSION
SB05: Color Wheels
– Read: Creative Habit chapters 11&12 and bring discussion question with your name on it

DAY 7 – Wed, Feb 5 – Adobe Illustrator (meeting in the computer lab)

IN CLASS:
– discussion of reading
– checking sketchbook assignments
– reminder that everything in this class must be documented for mid-term and final portfolios/documentation disks
– everyone selects the zazzle product they will be ordering, we brainstorm ideas, and begin drawing (in the computer lab)

SB06: Color Schemes
– present research and sketches for Loar music hall spaces

DAY 8 – Mon, Feb 10 – Adobe Illustrator
IN CLASS:
– check sketchbook assignments
– present research and sketches for Loar music hall spaces
– how to turn strokes into outlines, how to work in outlines mode, how to make outlines of text (how to make sure your Loar Drawings will cut out properly on the vinyl cutter).
– Prepare proposal for sending to Professor Moore, and email to him by end of class

– be ready to present zazzle drawing for critique

 DAY 9 – Wed, Feb 12: NO CLASS MEETING – This is an out-of-class work day.

Day 11 – Mon, Feb 17 – Adobe Illustrator

– presentation of zazzle drawings for crit & remind people of forwarding the receipt from your purchase
– figure drawing

– making any necessary changes to your zazzle drawings based on feedback from crit and order the products (must forward the email receipt to Ellen by 1 hour before class)

– portraiture practice in pairs using pastel or colored pencil

– Meeting individually with everyone in the hall to discuss progress in the class (bring mid-term portfolio)

– intro to our In-class Transparent Substrates Project (prep for first resin pour)

– vote on name for our class exhibition, and assign people to committees
– demo resin mixing/pouring

Tue, Apr 8 – DO GOOD DAY You are required to attend the Food & Art class’ presentations: 1pm in the back of the library near the wall mural

DAY 24 – Wed, Apr 9 – Transparent Substrates

IN CLASS:
– crit of out-of-class transparent substrate project
– watching “Bomb It” and possibly watch “Exit Through the Giftshop”

DUE NEXT CLASS:
– Transparent Substrates Reflection Writing (online)
– Read Stencil Nation, pages 1-93 and bring a discussion question to class with your name on it
– select an artist or two from Stencil Nation textbook that you would like to present a report on (everyone must have a unique artist, so have a back-up choice)

IN CLASS:
– Intro Talk about Stencils/Spraypaint (look at images of examples and discuss the medium); why use it? why not? Make list of what we associate with these media/techniques
– Visiting artist to talk about stencils (Tonja)
– Go over reading discussion questions
– Figure out who’s bringing what for the reception (food, beverages, etc)
– everyone sign up for artist reports (selected from Stencil Nation)
