Spray Paint Stencil

FIRST: Check out these resources.

Why are we doing this?
Street art is a very important element of contemporary drawing (as we’ve learned through “Bomb It” and “Exit Through the Gift Shop”), and it is important to investigate its potential in order to be well-rounded artists with an understanding of a wide variety of media and techniques. This project also allows us to return to foundational ideas of positive versus negative space.

Objectives/Requirements:
These drawings must display an interesting composition and consideration of street art’s associations, as well as consideration for the material/object you stencil on. Line, shape, color, and repetition will be particularly important, as these elements are very apparent when you are drawing with this technique.

Process:
– Brainstorm ideas. IMPORTANT: You can draw on any LEGAL surface you like. Be willing to go out into the community to secure space. Be ready to explain your concept.
– Present your idea/research/sketches.
– Create the work.

Grading criteria:
5pt – Craft (how well did you execute the work? Was there evidence of effort, or does it looked rushed and sloppy?)
5pt – Quality of composition (use of positive and negative space)
5pt – Use of line, shape, color, and repetition
5pt – creativity/originality
