*WEEK 1* — Fri, Sept 8
IN CLASS:
– Intro Syllabus / – Safety Manual Consent Form
– everyone needs a sketchbook/notebook
– Everyone sign up for Boston Public Library eCard (allows free access to Lynda)
start Learning Rhino (do items under “Day 1”):  Intro to Rhino and do some exercises 
– First 3D printing exercise: model/print a small item (such as a piece of jewelry, etc.)
– do planning/research for the absurdist utensil (for a food that doesn’t usually need a utensil); I will bring in some books for reference [afternoon project]
– Shingo visit for 3D Printer demo after 12:30

DUE NEXT CLASS:
– complete Syllabus Contract online
– Safety Manual Consent Form
– bring 10 sketches/ideas for your utensil project (be ready to share/critique)


ART EVENT: AHA! New Bedford – Thu, Sept 14 (must stop by Gallery 244 in Star Store sometime between 6-7:30pm for the exhibit of new grad students’ work)

*WEEK 2* — Fri, Sept 15
IN CLASS:
Learning Rhino: [do the items under “Day 2”]
– crit the 10 sketches for utensils [morning]
– Start modeling the utensils
– Artist, Joost During, is coming to class to talk about designing utensils
– discuss privilege/difference as it relates to the work we’ll be making in this class (subject, form, content, context) Maybe watch the Rainbow Bagel video – usability/understanding your audience

DUE NEXT CLASS:
– watch all of “Accurate Modeling”
submit a draft file of your 3D modeled utensil (should be print-ready)


*WEEK 3* — Fri, Sept 22
IN CLASS:
Learning Rhino: [do the items under “Day 3”]
– print drafts of our utensils
– start research/planning for chair projects
– brain break: 3D printing glass 

DUE NEXT CLASS:
– bring 10 sketches/ideas for your chair projects (be ready to share/critique)
– login to Lynda and watch “Rhino for Mac Essential Training > Preparing for Digital Fabrication > 5. Solids (all of it)” and “6. Transforming Geometry (all of it)”

ART EVENT: CVPA Gallery, 4-6pm, Fri, Sept 22 [If you can’t make it, you can write a paper]

*WEEK 4* — Fri, Sept 29
IN CLASS:
– look at utensils and work on final drafts
– Shingo visit for demo
– Artist and designer, Liz Welch, visiting to talk about her practice and furniture design (11am)
– 11:45 – 1:45 working on files (Ellen has to run to CVPA campus for a meeting), check in at 1:45 as a class

DUE NEXT CLASS:
– login to Lynda and watch this video: “Rhino for Mac Essential Training > 5. Creating Measured Drawings and Layouts > Creating two-dimensional drawings
– submit final draft files for utensils ON CANVAS


ART EVENT: CVPA Gallery, 4-6pm, Th, Oct 5 [If you can’t make it, you can write a paper]

*WEEK 5* — Fri, Oct 6
IN CLASS:
– print final utensils
– critique sketches for chair projects, and work on creating our first files for laser-cutting
– talk about books on reserve at the library and new assignment
– talk about midterm documentation (possible photo demo)

DUE NEXT CLASS:
– Must have finished printed final utensil for critique
– arrive with a chair file for cutting out in matte board
– Complete the library book-on-reserve assignment (submit pic on Canvas)


ART EVENT: AHA! New Bedford – Thu, Oct 12. You must go to (register here) the Mark Dion Lecture, 7-8pm at the Whaling Museum [If you can’t make it, you can write a paper]

*WEEK 6* — Fri, Oct 13
IN CLASS:
– final crit for printed final utensils
– cutting out matte-board chairs with laser cutter, critiquing, drafting new versions based on feedback
– reminder about midterm course evals

DUE NEXT CLASS:
– reflection on utensils (submit online)


*WEEK 7* — Fri, Oct 20
IN CLASS:
– discuss our upcoming exhibition (title, location, press release, posters, FB event, etc)
– Laser cut more chairs
– prep files for CNC
– do a demo on documentation using the photo room in the basement of Star Store

– do intro to CNC with Shingo

– prep for exhibition of chair models and eating utensils
– reminder to get final version of matte board chair done for next class
– 11:45 – 1:45 working on files (Ellen has to run to CVPA campus for a meeting), check in at 1:45 as a class

– must have your final matte-board chair to turn in/grading

– for those who have finished chairs, can work on rings/alternative project we’ll order from Shapeways
– Helpful note: if you need a refresher on the capabilities of the Gumball tool, this is a pretty good video that might be helpful with your ring project; also this fillet video might be another good refresher for the project
